Team roper Koontz grabs third Reno Rodeo title

(Check back as the story will be updated Sunday and Monday)

By Susan Kanode

RENO, Nev., June 26 – Winning a pair of championship silver spurs from the Reno Rodeo can do a lot for any rodeo contestant’s resume. Two of the 2010 champions have been lucky enough to win them more than once.

Team roper Kory Koontz, from Sudan, Texas, won his third pair on Saturday night. The veteran heeler won his first pair in 1996 roping with Matt Tyler, and his second in 2002 roping with Daniel Green. This year, he did the heeling for Colby Lovell from Madisonville, Texas. They posted a time of 16.9 seconds on three runs and were the high-money earners at the rodeo with $14,786 each.

Prior to tonight’s rodeo, Koontz was ranked 24th in the PRCA World Standings. He nearly doubled his 2010 earnings with what he won and put himself in position to qualify for his 15th Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Lovell was ranked 18th in the heading standings. The top 15 in the world make the trip to Las Vegas to compete at the WNFR for world championships next December.

Rodeo contestants that win in Reno use the momentum and confidence they gained as they head into the lucrative Fourth Of July run. Known as “Cowboy Christmas,” more money is available in the next week at rodeos across the United States than at any other time of year.

Josh Peek has been chasing all-around titles since he joined the PRCA in 2002. He won the all-around and tie-down roping titles at Reno in 2008. This year, he finished seventh in the tie-down roping, earned a check in the steer wrestling and got his second all-around championship.

Gabe Ledoux from Kaplan, La., won the steer wrestling and $13,624. LeDoux won the National Western Stock Show Rodeo in Denver last January and was in pursuit of his second WNFR qualification. In March, at Rodeo Houston, when broke his foot and found himself on the injured reserve list.

In 2009, he missed qualifying for the Wrangler NFR by just one spot. The money that he won in Reno should  move him into the top five in the world standings.

The Reno Rodeo is part of the Wrangler Million Dollar Tour presented by Justin Boots. The final round will air on In Country Television (broadcast on DISH Network 230 and DIRECTV 344) at 8 p.m. (ET) July 10. Check local listings for re-air dates.

Harter takes lead in average

By Susan Kanode and Johnna Espinoza

Reno, Nev. – Saddle bronc rider Bradley Harter moved into first place in the average at the Reno (Nev.) Rodeo on June 25 at the Reno Livestock Events Center.

The Weatherford, Texas, cowboy was elated and genuinely surprised because didn’t know that previous leader Rusty Allen, from Eagle Mountain, Utah, had a score of 167 points on two head.

“I had absolutely no idea,” Harter said. “I didn’t add it up in my head.”

Well, luckily the rodeo secretary does. Harter is the new leader heading into tonight’s finals of the Gold stop of the Wrangler Million Dollar Tour presented by Justin Boots. The Reno Rodeo spurs for the overall winner goes to the cowboy with the highest score on three rides. Harter had 83 points on his first ride and scored 87 points on Friday night to jump into the lead with 170 points on two head.

“The past three years I’ve had great winters and slow summers,” Harter said. “This year, I had an average winter, so I said I was going to have a great summer, so far it has have started out great.”

Harter is 18th in the PRCA World Standings, so money won in Reno could help propel him into the Top 15, and he hopes a fifth Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualification.
The top 12 contestants in each event, and the top 12 teams in team roping, compete tonight for overall Reno titles. (See results below for a listing.)

Even those who didn’t make the finals had a reason to smile on Friday because of the money up for grabs.

Nebraska bareback rider Steven Dent had the high-marked ride in the bareback riding with an 83-point score on Big Bend Rodeo’s Holly Time. Dent did not make Saturday’s finals, but he is trying to keep his momentum going. Dent, who is in third place in world standings, trails leader Ryan Gray, followed by Kaycee Feild, who is currently sidelined with a knee injury. Gray rode Friday night, but his 74 points was not enough to advance him to the finals.

“I’m in the top five right now. If I can just stay there, I have a chance to win a world title,” said Dent, who finished second in the world in 2008 to then travel partner Justin McDaniel.

Dent is currently traveling with Gray, the three-time and reigning World Champion Bobby Mote and Jason Havens. Being in the truck with the trio is helping motivate Dent.
“They show up and expect to win first,” he said.

Another cowboy inspired is team roping header Joel Bach. The son of four-time World Champion Team Roping Heeler Allen Bach has recently paired up with eight-time World Champion Rich Skelton. The duo finished with a time of 5.4 seconds on Friday. It was the fastest time of the night, but not quick enough to advance the new tandem to Saturday’s finals. Reno was the first big rodeo the cowboys have roped together.

“He’s always won and he’s always made the (Wrangler National) Finals, so why can’t I do that with him?” Bach said. “I just want to go everywhere with him because I know we can win.”

The Reno Rodeo finals will air on In Country Television (broadcast on DISH Network 230 and DIRECTV 344) at 8 p.m. (ET) July 10. Check your local listings for re-air dates and time…The June 25 performance was Wrangler Patriot night featuring tributes to those who serve in the military… Eight cowboys, including Mote and Joel Bach, split the $16,000 cost of a chartered Lear Jet to travel from Sante Fe, N.M. to Reno when flights were cancelled on June 24…Bill Casner, co-owner of the Kentucky Derby winning horse Super Saver, attended the Reno Rodeo on June 24 and was interviewed by rodeo announcer Bob Tallman. Casner, of WinStar Farm, is an avid team roper.

LaValley and DeMoss earn paychecks at Reno Rodeo

By Susan Kanode

RENO, Nev., June 24 – Bareback rider Dusty LaValley and saddle bronc rider Heith DeMoss are the first roughstock riders to get paychecks at the Reno Rodeo.

The first round was completed in bareback riding and saddle bronc riding on Thursday night. LaValley, from Bezanson, Alberta, rode Flying Five Rodeo’s Wind Chimes for 83 points and got a check for $3,429, and because he had a 79 in the second round, he also leads the average. LaValley will have a chance to ride for the championship on Saturday night.

DeMoss had an 85-point effort on Rosser Rodeo’s Flood Light. This earned the Heflin, La., saddle bronc rider $3,203. Unfortunately, he didn’t make it to the eight-second whistle in the second round, so this is the only check that he will get from Reno.

Both of these cowboys competed earlier in the week. There were two successful saddle bronc riders on Thursday – Bradley Harter from Weatherford, Texas, and Tyler Correington  from Hastings, Minn. Each had 83-point efforts and tied for third in the round. Both of them have their second round horses on Friday and are good candidates to compete in the finals.

Lovell and Koontz move into lead in the average at Reno

RENO, Nev., June 22, - Kory Koontz knows what it takes to win a pair of Reno Rodeo championship spurs. After all, the veteran team roping heeler has done it twice before.
The first time he won the championship was in 1998 roping with Matt Tyler. Then, he got another pair with Daniel Green in 2002. Koontz, from Sudan, Texas, is roping with Colby Lovell from Madisonville, Texas, this year and Koontz hopes to add to his collection. If they win, it will be Lovell’s first pair of Reno spurs.

Lovell and Koontz stopped the clock in the first round with a 5.5-second run during slack Tuesday afternoon. Then in the performance, they had a 5.7 and now are placing in both rounds and leading the average with a time of 11.2 seconds on two head. With four more performances left before Saturday night’s finals, the duo is looking very good to qualify.

Lovell was 18th in the June 21 PRCA World Standings and Koontz 24th and a big win in Reno will definitely give them momentum for the upcoming Fourth of July run.

The bareback riders and saddle bronc riders both had their first round competition on Tuesday. The high-marked ride in bareback riding went to Mountain States Circuit Champion Craig Wisehart. Wisehart is a student at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas, but is originally from Platteville, Colo. He had an 82-point ride on Big Easy from Western Rodeo, a horse that had bucked him off at the Fort Worth (Texas) rodeo last February.

In the saddle bronc riding it was one of the renowned Wright brothers that finished in first. Jesse, who travels with older brothers Cody and Alex and twin Jake scored 83 points on Western Rodeo’s Pine Ridge. Both Wright and Wisehart are currently second in the first round. A good score on Wednesday should help them qualify for the finals.

Bronc rider Allen moves into lead in average at Reno Rodeo

By Susan Kanode

RENO, Nev.—June 21 – Rusty Allen has had a very successful saddle bronc riding career having qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo five times.

The talented athlete is looking for a sixth having just missed being among the top 15 in the world standings in 2009. And while he is currently ranked 34th in the PRCA World Standings, he might have just changed everything during the fourth performance of the Reno Rodeo.

Allen matched up with the reigning World Champion Saddle Bronc Horse, Spring Planting of the Flying Five Rodeo Company, for an 88-point ride. Combined with his ride on Sunday night, he now has command of the average with a total of 167 points on two head.

“There’s nothing better than coming to Reno and have that kind of horse drawn and to have it work out,” Allen said. “Every jump you’re on the edge. You never feel like you’re in control.”

Having control of the standings now should earn him a trip back for Saturday night’s finals. Allen has yet to win a set of championship Reno silver spurs and with the big paychecks available, it could improve his position in the standings significantly.

The top of the leaderboard in bareback riding was packed with 82-point rides at the Reno Rodeo on Monday night. The five contestants are part of a six-man tie for first place in the second round. Ethan McNeill from Grantsville, Utah, Matt Bright from Azle, Texas, Jared Keylon from Fort Scott, Kan., Joe Gunderson from Agar, S.D.., and Jessy Davis from Payson, Utah, all hope to get a paycheck.

Bright and Gunderson are now tied for second place in the average with 159 points on two head. Dusty LaValley from Bezanson, Alberta leads with 163 points.

In the barrel racing, Jolene Stewart, from Springer, Okla., took the lead in the average after winning the first round and having the fast time of the rodeo Monday. She took her horse J.L. Dash to Heaven around the pattern in 17.15 seconds, just off of her previous time of 17.14. Stewart is training the horse for Jud Little Ranches and has primarily just competed at futurities. This is the first big rodeo the duo has competed at.

"Danger" DeMoss rides previously unridden bronc in Reno

By Julie Mankin and Susan Kanode

RENO, NEV.; June 20, 2010 ---“Danger” mixed with a previously unridden bronc on Sunday at the 91st Reno Rodeo, and the result was nothing short of spectacular.

Cajun bronc rider Heith DeMoss, a 25-year-old family man whom friends call “Danger,” drew Rosser Rodeos’ Flood Light and impressed the judges into awarding him 85 points and the lead in the first round of saddle bronc riding.

“I’ve never had any kind of luck in Reno ever,” DeMoss said. “I’ve been knocked out and beat up and never won anything. But I came in this year saying it’s all new…a new attitude.”

Earlier at the Reno Rodeo, two-time World Champion Steer Wrestler Luke Branquinho wowed the Sunday evening crowd aboard his new horse Spiderman. He was nearly halfway down the arena when he got down on the hard runner and still posted a 3.9-second run to go to second place in the second round and third in the average based on his 4.3 in slack. Like DeMoss, Branquinho’s never placed in the average.

“It’s one of the few short rounds I’ve never made,” said Branquinho, who won his world titles in 2004 and 2008. “I’ve won go-round money, but never made it to the short round, so it will be great to come back.”

Tie-down ropers Clint Robinson and Bradley Bynum posted times of 7.5 and 7.6 seconds, respectively, to move into first and second in their event’s first round, with Hunter Herrin making the only move in the average Sunday night.

Two-time world champion barrel racer Sherry Cervi and California Circuit standings leader Nellie Williams each matched their first-round times, which were identical, with identical runs in the second round to move into a tie for second in the average behind leader and defending Reno Rodeo champ Lindsay Sears.

Lee Rosser’s athletic bronc with Peppy San Badger breeding carried bareback rider Bo Casper to the highest score in that event, an 81 that put him second in the first round.
For the third straight performance, every bareback rider made the eight-second whistle. And Pennsylvania header Justin Yost teamed with Texan Kyle Crick to stop the clock in 6.7 seconds in team roping, placing them in the second round and average just ahead of Arizona ropers Derrick Begay and Cesar de la Cruz, who also were successful on Sunday.

The Reno Rodeo is a Gold stop on the Wrangler Million Dollar Tour presented by Justin Boots, and will crown average champions on June 26.

Masters, Corkill move into lead at Reno Rodeo

By Julie Mankin

RENO, NEV.; June 19 --- Hometown cowboy Jade Corkill enjoyed a wild welcome in Reno on Saturday night, and not just because he and his header from Tennessee, Chad Masters, roped the fastest steer in history last December.

No doubt, fans at the 91st Reno Rodeo had watched the pair post that history-making 3.3-second run at the 2009 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, and were especially proud of the Fallon, Nev.,-raised Corkill.

He didn’t let the crowd down on Saturday. Corkill and Masters’ picture-perfect 6.0-second run was the fastest of the performance and matched their 6.0 from slack to push them into the lead in the team roping average.

The Reno Rodeo is a Gold stop on the Wrangler Million Dollar Tour presented by Justin Boots, and will crown average champions on June 26.

In the meantime, Masters and Corkill will also compete in the lucrative Bob Feist Invitational jackpot roping in Reno on Monday.

Saddle bronc riding PRCA World Standings leader Rod Hay of Wildwood, Alberta, had the high-marked ride aboard Flying U’s Short Fusin, but it was fellow Canadian Dustin Flundra who truly moved the crowd. Flundra scored 75 points on Flying U’s West Hills, then walked right up to the gelding and caught him in the middle of the arena.

Flundra slid his bronc saddle off and patted West Hills, then removed the former saddle horse’s bronc halter for the last time. Cotton Rosser retired the decorated AQHA-registered horse more than a decade after his owner had donated him to the West Hills College bronc riders.

Bareback rider Heath Ford’s 82-point ride aboard Rosser’s Short Bar claimed top honors in that event, while Ben Goodman, who lost his home in Beaumont, Texas, to Hurricane Katrina five years ago, posted a 4.3-second run to move into a third-place split in the second round of steer wrestling.

Joseph Parsons, 25, moved to third in the second round and second in the average of the tie-down roping with his 9.5-second run Saturday night, while two barrel racers moved into the top three spots in their event. Idaho’s Kyna Johnson rounded the pattern in 17.16 seconds, followed closely by Utah’s Marcie Jarvis with a 17.18.

Steve Woolsey was bucked off hard in the saddle bronc riding, but turned around to get on his re-ride bull, Flying U’s half Mexican fighting bull The Liberator and made it count with 83 points to move into a tie with Ben McPherson for second place in the round.

Broncs have strong showing at the Reno Rodeo

By Julie Mankin/June 18

In the saddle bronc riding, most of the glory went to stock contracting companies Flying Five Rodeo and Big Bend Rodeo, who brought some of the their top horses at the 91st Reno (Nev.) Rodeo on June 18 on the Reno Livestock Event Center. It was the opening night of the Gold stop on the Wrangler Million Dollar Tour presented by Justin Boots.

Six outstanding bronc riders, including eight-time Canadian champion Rod Hay and 2006 World Champion Chad Ferley, hit the dirt hard before announcers Bob Tallman and Wayne Brooks fired up the crowd for defending Wrangler National Finals Rodeo average champion Shaun Stroh.

Jeff Willert, who was bucked off, described the spectacle as “just good broncs having a good night.”

“I don’t know if we weren’t ready for them or what, but they were as bad as (Wrangler NFR) eliminators,” he said. “They’re good bucking horses. They’re going to get even better and you’re going to see them a lot.”

Stroh, a 37-year-old father of five from Dickinson, N.D., became the only cowboy to make the whistle, spurring Flying Five’s Hit Man for 81 points and collected the day money.

“Once it starts like that with guys bucking off, it can go like that for the whole perf,” Stroh said. “I just kind of blocked it all out and tried to ride like I always do.”

Bareback riders enjoyed the opposite fate, with none being bucked off Friday night, including Canadian Dusty LaValley, who came out on top with an 83-point ride on Flying Five’s Wind Chimes.

Texas team ropers Justin Parish and Trey Johnson went to the lead in their event with two runs Friday totaling 12.2 seconds, while tie-down roper Jerrad Hofstetter of New Mexico took a commanding lead in the second round (8.4 seconds) and average (18.7 on two).

Two-time Wrangler NFR steer wrestler Gabe LeDoux of Kaplan, La., and 2006 World Champion Dean Gorsuch of Gering, Neb., traded a pair of three-second runs on Friday in slack and the performance to take a commanding lead in the average with times of 7.8 and 7.9 seconds on two, respectively.

Barrel racing fans Friday night witnessed what could hold up as the fastest run of the entire week – a 16.95-second run posted by Brenda Mays of Oregon. But 2008 World Champion Lindsay Sears’ pair of runs – a 17.36 and 17.20 – put her in the driver’s seat to win the average in Reno for the second straight year. Meanwhile, newcomer Jolene Stewart, a trainer from Oklahoma, won the first round with a 17.14.

Wesley Silcox, the 2007 World Champion Bull Rider, made a spectacular 90-point ride on Flying Five bull No. 698 to go into the lead in the first round. The last time he won the Reno Rodeo was in 2007.

Friday marked Tough Enough to Wear Pink night, and a ceremony was held honoring the $57,000 that the Reno Rodeo donated to northern Nevada’s “Moms on the Run” program to help mothers battle breast cancer.

All contestants in Reno except the bull riders compete in two long rounds, with the top 12 coming back for finals on June 26. The nine-performance rodeo boasts more than 700 contestants and roughly 135,000 fans.

The second performance begins at 7 p.m. Saturday. Tickets range from $12 to $25 and are available at www.renorodeo.com or by calling 800-225-2277. For more information, please call 775-329-3877.

Reno Rodeo helps kick off summer run

By Johnna Espinoza/ProRodeo.com

Many cowboys consider the Reno (Nev.) Rodeo the start of the big summer run that builds to a crescendo with “Cowboy Christmas” over the Fourth of July weekend.

This 91st edition of the Reno Rodeo runs June 18 through the finals at 7 p.m. (PT) June 26 at the Reno Livestock Events Center. More than 700 contestants will compete in the 91st rodeo, which is a Gold stop on the Wrangler Million Dollar Tour presented by Justin Boots.

The Reno Rodeo finals will be broadcast on In Country Television (DISH Network Channel 230/ DIRECTV Channel 344) at 8 p.m. ET on July 10. Check local listings for re-air dates and times. ProRodeoLive.com will provide a daily audio Webcast from the rodeo. Check back on ProRodeo.com for daily coverage.

The Charlie Daniels Band will perform at the Knitting Factory Concert House on June 23 in Reno, Nev. Daniels serves on the volunteer Board of Directors for the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund. For more on the show, go to knittingfactory.com. Photo courtesy the Knitting Factory Concert House

The Reno Rodeo, which began in 1919, is the third largest event in the city, according to the Lahontan Valley News, and its economic impact is between $42-44 million annually. A crowd of about 135,000 is expected to attend the 10-day event.

In addition, several other events help fill the city, such as the June 17 Seminole Hard Rock Xtreme Bulls stop, presented by B&W Trailers Hitches.

The city also welcomes lots of roping fans with the World’s Greatest Roper (June 20) and the Bob Feist Invitational (June 21). A carnival, parade, concerts at local venues and other events add to the excitement in the “Biggest Little City in the World.”
