For the Record: Great Falls

The Great Falls, Mont., rodeo is a competition of many names. Now known as the Big Sky Roundup Rodeo, this iconic competition has also been called the Montana State Fair Rodeo and the North Montana State Fair Rodeo.

Since 1945, Great Falls has hosted some of the biggest names in professional rodeo, but only the best left their mark by setting a rodeo record. Cowboys will have a chance to top those records and win their share of the prize money Aug. 1-4.

Great Falls’ biggest payout was in 2014 with $150,710.

Ryan Jarrett set the Great Falls record for most money won in all-around in 2013 with $5,553.

Bareback rider Bobby Mote set the Great Falls record of 90 points in 2009.

Steer wrestler Trevor Knowles set two Great Falls records in 2013. First, Knowles made a 2.9-second run, which helped him to also set the two-head average record of 6.8 seconds.

Team ropers Dustin Bird and Russell Cardoza set the Great Falls record of 3.9 seconds in 2017. Two sets of team ropers share the two-head average record of 9.3 seconds, Travis Tryan and Michael Jones (2008) and Erich Rogers and Cory Petska (2017).

Saddle bronc rider Sam Spreadborough set the Great Falls record of 92 points in 2010.

One year after setting the all-around record, Jarrett set the tie-down roping record of 7.4 seconds in 2014.

Barrel racer Shantel Longwell has the longest-standing Great Falls record of 13.99 seconds, set in 1985.
