PRCA For The Record: Pueblo

Before Colorado was even a state, the event that eventually became the Colorado State Fair was already established. In 1869, a horse exhibition was held in Pueblo with 2,000 attendees, and that spurred into the Colorado State Fair once statehood was established in 1876.

Over time, the horse exhibition expanded into a rodeo, and by 1945 it was sanctioned by the Cowboys’ Turtle Association, which transitioned to a new name – the Rodeo Cowboys Association. (“Professional” was added to the association’s name in 1975.)

A lot has changed for both ProRodeo and the rodeo in Pueblo, Colo., but the tradition of top-tier rodeo action remains the same.

One Pueblo record that’s unlikely to be broken any time soon is Steve Woolsey’s 2011 bull riding score of 95 points on Four L & Diamond S Rodeo’s Big Iron.

Woolsey is a seven-time qualifier for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (2005-06, 2008-11 and 2013) with more than $1.1 million in career earnings since joining in 2005. The Utah cowboy is still at it, splitting the win at the Livingston (Mont.) Roundup in July.

Cowboys will have a chance to top Woolsey’s record, and the rest, while claiming their share of Pueblo’s prize money Aug. 23-26.
