Tie-down roper Chance Oftedahl made a 6.8-second run during the third round of the RAM GLCFR, Nov. 10. Oftedahl’s run is the fastest one so far in the 2019 season and matches the fastest run made in the 2018 season, accomplished by Marty Yates during the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo at Denver in January.

Deb Copenhaver is considered one of the greatest bronc riders to come from the Pacific Northwest. He won a pair of saddle bronc riding world championships (1955-1956), was runner-up to Casey Tibbs three times (1951, ’53 and ’54) and was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 1992.

The ProRodeo Hall of Fame and Museum of the American Cowboy’s new display, “Captured Moments: Rodeo Photography Exhibit,” is open through the end of April. The exhibit features a variety, from recent competitions to rodeos more than 100 years ago, with familiar names such as Larry Mahan and Chris LeDoux in the mix.

On Sept. 22, veteran bareback rider J.R. Vezain suffered a broken back while competing at the Pasadena (Texas) Livestock Show & Rodeo when he was riding Frontier Rodeo Company’s Brazos Bash. The injury has left Vezain, a five-time qualifier for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (2012-14 and 2016-2017), with mobility issues from the waist down.

The first week of November was highlighted by the $425,000 Clem McSpadden National Finals Steer Roping, Nov. 2-3. While the Top 15 steer ropers were duking it out in Mulvane, Kan., four other PRCA events were taking place for a total of $675,454 in prize money across the five rodeos.

This two-day competition boasts a payout of $425,000 for the Top 15 steer ropers in the PRCA.
