For the Record: Red Bluff

The Red Bluff (Calif.) Round-Up is underway, drawing in veteran and rookie cowboys alike to compete in one of California’s historic rodeos.

No arena records were set at last year’s rodeo, and one of the Red Bluff records remains unbroken for 52 years. Steer wrestler Anson Thurman set the Red Bluff record at 3.5 seconds in 1965, and it has yet to be matched or topped.

Barrel racer Fallon Taylor’s 1995 arena record of 16.96 seconds also has remained untouched for 22 years.

The $4,893 that Herbert Theriot won in the Red Bluff all-around in 2000 has yet to be topped or matched in 17 years. (When adjusted for inflation, Theriot’s record set in 2000 would be the equivalent of about $6,936 in 2017 dollars, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).

Four arena records were set in 2004 and two remain to this day – bareback rider Royce Ford’s 89-point ride and tie-down roper Clint Robinson’s 7.2-second time have yet to be topped.

A third record was set in 2004 and has since been matched twice. Thirteen years ago, team ropers Blaine Linaweaver and B.J. Campbell landed a 4.2-second run, and that was matched by Wade Wheatley and Britt Bockius in 2007, and then Riley Minor and Brady Minor also made a 4.2 in 2015.

The fourth record in 2004 came from bull rider Cody Buller, who matched Robey Condra’s 92-point ride that was made in 2003. Red Bluff didn’t get another 92-point ride until Bobby Waller in 2006 and Shawn Proctor in 2007.

As the 2017 Red Bluff Round-Up continues through this weekend, we’ll soon find out if any new records have been set. Check back with to see how this year’s rodeo unfolds.
