July 28 is the National Day of the Cowboy. The Fort Worth Stockyards Coliseum is celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the First Indoor Rodeo held there. City Council District 3 Representative Jeff Griffith says the city council has an agreement with Texas Tech University in Lubbock that the rodeo will be held in the Coliseum in 2019. If the city votes in favor of turning the Coliseum over to Texas Tech on May 5, the university won’t demolish the building until after the 2019 ABC Pro Rodeo. While it isn’t a long-term fix, it does buy the American Business Club and city of Lubbock some time to find a new venue for the event. The 2018 ABC ProRodeo was March 29-31. Councilman Griffith told KCBD TV, “We’re going to have to hope our timetable is good, it’s never perfect, but we are dedicated. There’s an ad hoc committee in place today to go forward and study and look at a dirt event center that is made for rodeo. The Coliseum is not made for rodeo. It’s adapted. We need a logistical place that has much more acreage.” As of right now, there is no exact timeline for a dirt event center but, pending the city vote on May 5, Griffith is confident things are headed in the right direction … The Greeley (Colo.) Stampede is offering a fundraising challenge for local groups and nonprofits. Groups have the opportunity to sell tickets to the Greeley Stampede’s Faith & Family Night headlining concert, Matthew West with special guest Zach Williams, to raise money for the group. Participating groups also will have the opportunity to win a meet-and-greet with West. The 2018 Greeley Stampede is on tap June 22 through July 4. For every regularly-priced ticket sold for the Matthew West concert June 24, the Greeley Stampede will donate $5 back to that organization. For every 25 tickets sold, the group will receive a pair of free tickets to the concert. The group that sells the most tickets through the fundraiser will win a group photo with West during his meet-and-greet before to the concert. “We are excited to see local groups rise to this challenge,” ticket office manager Tawnya Garcia said in a press release. “It’s fun to see these groups come together and have a good time at the event, and to help groups meet their fundraising goals.” To be qualified for the $5 reimbursement, groups must sell a minimum of 25. The tickets must be sold between April 2 and May 15. The fundraising challenge group ticket orders must be placed on or before 12 p.m. (MT) on May 16. Tickets must then be distributed by the groups that sold them. To enter the challenge, groups can submit their application at Participating groups will be listed on the Stampede website for those that are interested in purchasing tickets through the fundraiser. “You know, rodeo, it’s a lot more than just a sport. It’s a heritage. It’s a way of life. It’s the way I was raised growing up on a ranch and the Western way of life. This is a sport that showcases the skills we use daily.”
