For The Record: Fort Smith

The name has changed but the caliber of competition remains the same in Fort Smith, Ark., home to the fastest steer roping time in ProRodeo history.

Cody Scheck set that famed steer roping run in 7.7 seconds at Fort Smith in 2012. Nobody before or since has had a faster run across all PRCA-sanctioned rodeos.

Since 1949, the Fort Smith rodeo has transitioned from the Arkansas-Oklahoma Rodeo to Old Fort Days Rodeo, where the tradition of fast-paced action is ongoing through June 2.

Only the best will make the rodeo’s record book at one of the largest rodeos in the Midwest.

Fort Smith’s biggest payout was in 2000 with $181,080.

Justin McDaniel set the record for most money won in all-around in 2005 with $5,102.

Bareback rider Chris Harris set the Fort Smith record of 88 points in 2007. Bobby Mote matched that in 2014.

Dan Courmier set the steer wrestling record in 1994 in 3.1 seconds, which Jason Tapley matched in 2014. Mike Bush and Shane Henderson both set the Fort Smith record of 7.5 seconds on two runs in 1996.

Team ropers Logan Olson and Matt Kasner set the Fort Smith record of 3.9 seconds in 2013. The two-run average record of 9.2 seconds was set by Joel Bach and Jim Ross Cooper in 2015.

Saddle bronc rider Sam Sheppick set the Fort Smith record of 88 points in 2003.

Tie-down roper Hunter Herrin set two Fort Smith records in 2014. Herrin clocked in with a record-setting, 6.8-second run which helped him also set the two-run average record of 14.4 seconds.

Barrel racer Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi set the record in 2013 with her 15.97-second run.

Steer roper Vin Fisher Jr. set the two-run average record in 2014 in 20.6 seconds.

Bull rider Cole Echols set the Fort Smith record of 91 points in 2014.

Check back with prorodeo.com after Old Fort Days concludes to find out who won and if any arena records were broken.
