News & Notes from the rodeo trail

Rush Leon Herrington, of Palestine, Texas, a PRCA Gold Card member, passed away Jan. 7, 2019, at his home. He was 81. The highlight of Herrington’s PRCA career came in 1974 when he qualified for the National Finals Rodeo in steer wrestling. He finished 10th in the world standings that season. Herrington retired from the Union Pacific Railroad after 42 years of service. He was a founding member of the Anderson County Youth Livestock Association, where he served as president for 40-plus years. Herrington served on the Brushy Creek Water Board and the Federal Department of Agriculture Board. He was a reserve deputy for Anderson County and served in the National Guard Reserve. Memorials may be made to the Rush Herrington Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Austin State Bank, 2745 S. Loop 256, Palestine, TX 75801; the Brushy Creek United Methodist Church, 11262 E. FM 837, Palestine, TX 75803; or to Heart to Heart Hospice, 1006 N. Mallard St., Palestine, TX 75801.



Norman Gatlin, PRCA Gold Card Member and Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame Inductee, passed away Jan. 13. Visitation will be Jan. 18 from 6 to 8 p.m. (CT), and the service will be Jan. 19 at 10 a.m. at Welch Funeral Home in Longview, Texas. The family is asking for donations to County Line Baptist Church in Harleton, Texas, in lieu of flowers.


On Jan. 10, the San Antonio (Texas) Stock Show & Rodeo Hall of Fame recognized 2019 Hall of Fame inductees Brenda Harris, Rita Stitch and Leon Coffee, and outstanding commiteemen and volunteers of the year. Coffee, a bullfighter and barrelman, was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in Colorado Springs, Colo., in 2018. The San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo established the Hall of Fame in 1998 to recognize those individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to their organization. The 2019 San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo is Feb. 7-23.


A PRCA Rodeo camp takes place in Fort Worth, Texas, from 8 am. – 1 p.m. (CT). All abilities welcome – ages 8-plus.

The Pendleton (Ore.) Round-Up Hall of Fame recently appointed directors. The new directors are Steve Hart, Casey White-Zollman, Mary French West and Jordan McDonald. Directors of the Round-Up Hall of Fame are appointed for three-year terms by the Round-Up and Happy Canyon Corporations to promote the rich history and heritage of these two community organizations. Hart will serve as a director of facility Management for the organization. White-Zollman will serve as the grants and website director. West has been chosen to direct the annual Hall of Fame banquet which kicks off Round-Up/Happy Canyon week in September with the introduction of the Hall of Fame inductees. McDonald will serve as the publicity director for the Hall of Fame and handle the Battle of the Bars event.

The Stephenville (Texas) City Council honored the Cowboy Capital of the World Pro Rodeo with a special proclamation last week. 2018 marked the fourth time Stephenville’s rodeo was nominated for the top 5 medium market PRCA rodeos honors. The proclamation that was presented by Mayor Doug Svien declared Jan. 8, 2019, as Cowboy Capital of the World Pro Rodeo Association Appreciation Day.
