Weekly Recap

by Matt Naber | Jan 25, 2019

As cold as the weather is in mid-January, PRCA competition was hot, as cowboys competed at one of the highest-paying rodeos of the regular season, the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo in Denver.

This week certainly belonged to Rhen Richard as he made one of the top tie-down roping runs and the fastest team roping run.

Denver’s payout hasn’t been added into the totals yet since it doesn’t conclude until Sunday. But from Jan. 15-23 there were four competitions worth a collective $115,304 across the U.S.

The fastest times and highest scores might not always make the record book, but they make a lasting memory for fans and competitors. With about 650 PRCA competitions across the Western Hemisphere each year, there are plenty of opportunities to make a memorable ride.

Although the prize money differs from one competition to the next, the judging remains consistent across the board.

In addition to the fame that comes with winning the most prize money, each ride was a chance to be the best of the week. Here’s a look at the highest scores and fastest times for each event during that period.

Bareback rider Richmond Champion had an 88-point ride on Calgary Stampede’s Added Money in Denver, Jan. 18.

Steer wrestler Riley Duval made a 3.5-second run in Denver, Jan. 18.

Richard and his team roping partner Quinn Kesler made a 4.9-second run in Denver, Jan. 20.

Three saddle bronc riders made 85-point rides this week – Ryder Wright on Summit Pro Rodeo’s Goodnight Trail in Denver, Jan. 18, Hawkins Boyce on The Cervi Brothers Rodeo’s Redial in Denver, Jan. 19, and Joey Sonnier III on Hi Lo ProRodeo’s Warhawk at the Homestead (Fla.) Championship Rodeo, Jan. 20.

Tie-down roper Adam Gray made a 7.7-second run in Denver, Jan. 17. His time was matched by Richard in Denver, Jan. 20.

Barrel racer Sally Young made a 15.11-second run at the Peace River Pro Rodeo Classic in Wauchula, Fla., Jan. 20.

Bull rider Dillon James Tyner made an 89-point ride on Summit Pro Rodeo’s Grey Denim in Denver, Jan. 19.
