In the sport's infancy, early rodeos were informal events – exhibition matches of skill with nothing but pride and perhaps a few wagers at stake. That is certainly not the case anymore. The PRCA is the premier rodeo organization in the world – especially when it comes to paying contestants.

During the calm before ProRodeo’s summer-run storm, 16 cowboys saw their position within the 2018 RAM World Standings improve this week by competing at 10 PRCA rodeos worth a collective $368,876. Tyler Wade moved from 19th to 15th among the team roping headers and Trey Yates moved from 17th to 13th among the heelers.

The name has changed but the caliber of competition remains the same in Fort Smith, Ark., home to the fastest steer roping time in ProRodeo history. Cody Scheck set that famed steer roping run in 7.7 seconds at Fort Smith in 2012. Nobody before or since has had a faster run across all PRCA-sanctioned rodeos.

PRCA CEO George Taylor speaks during a press conference Tuesday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. RFD-TV’s The American announced it will be sanctioned by the PRCA and will add $355,000 in additional prize money to increase the prize money to $2,355,000. The 2019 American will be held March 2-3 at AT&T Stadium.

Steer wrestler Shane Hadley, 26, was injured May 12 while competing at the Mineral Wells (Texas) Rodeo. Hadley is in the intensive care unit and is listed in critical, but stable condition, said Shiloh Napp, Shane’s older sister on May 18.

ProRodeo cowboys have struck gold at the Redding (Calif.) Rodeo since 1951, but only the best leave their mark by making a rodeo record. On May 17-19, cowboys will have a chance to win their share of the prize money at one of the spring run’s biggest rodeos. In 2009, Redding set a record for total payout with $193,451.
