Entering the 2018 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, the tightest competition throughout the events was in team roping. The margin of difference in team roping heading was $393, with Kaleb Driggers in second place. His heeling partner, Junior Nogueira, was in first place by $591. That margin isn’t so close any more.

Cody Hancock, the 2000 world champion bull rider, ended the 2001 Wrangler NFR with a bang, making the highest-scored bull ride in Wrangler NFR history, a 96-point ride on Diamond G Rodeo’s Mister USA.

It’s a mad dash to the finish line by Round 9 of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, and the round’s records show it. Bareback rider Rowdy Buechner set the Round 9 record of 90 points on Kesler Rodeo’s Painted Smile during his first and only trip to the Wrangler NFR in 2005.

Not all the round records are old at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Both the team roping and barrel racing records for Round 7 were broken during the 2017 Wrangler NFR. Team ropers Dustin Egusquiza and Kory Koontz clocked in at 3.5 seconds during Round 7 last year.

Competition really heats up at the halfway point of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, and Round 5 reflects that with three arena records. Saddle bronc rider Billy Etbauer holds the record for highest score for the entire Wrangler NFR with 93 points in Round 5 (2003) and Round 10 (2004).

Tie-down roper Cody Ohl set the Round 4 record in 2009 when he clocked in at 6.6 seconds. Ohl’s Round 4 record is 0.2 seconds faster than the top tie-down roping time for the entire 2018 season (6.8 seconds by Marty Yates in Denver).
