Since 1945, Great Falls, Mont., has hosted some of the biggest names in professional rodeo, but only the best left their mark by setting a rodeo record. Cowboys will have a chance to top those records and win their share of the prize money Aug. 1-4. Steer wrestler Trevor Knowles set two Great Falls records in 2013.

Instead of “getting out of Dodge,” many of the PRCA’s most competitive cowboys are heading to the Dodge City (Kan.) Roundup this week in hopes of winning their share of the prize money and possibly setting a Dodge City record. Steer roper Guy Allen set records in 2000 and 2001.

The end of July’s mad dash for cash created one of the biggest shakeups within the Top 15 for the entire season so far. With about $1.25 million up for grabs across 31 PRCA competitions, 44 cowboys saw their position improve within the Top 15. Chad Masters jumped 17 spots this week.

If the Fourth of July is Cowboy Christmas, then the end of July could be Cowboy Mardi Gras as the last week of July presented about $1.25 million in prize money thanks in part to multiple high-dollar rodeos such as Cheyenne (Wyo.) Frontier Days, Fiesta Days Rodeo in Spanish Fork, Utah, and the Ogden (Utah) Pioneer Days rodeo.

Steer wrestler J.T. “Whiz” Whisenhunt’s 3.0-second record time at the Deadwood (S.D.) Days of ’76 Rodeo is nearly as old as the rodeo itself. This year’s Deadwood Days of ’76 Rodeo is July 25-28, and every ride is a chance to top one of this iconic rodeo’s arena records.

With $1.76 million up for grabs between 20 PRCA competitions, cowboys were hitting the rodeo road July 16-22. From those competitions, 34 cowboys saw their positions improve within the Top 15. Steer wrestler Hunter Cure has the biggest move in the Top 15, from 18th to 11th.

Although Nebraska’s Big Rodeo in Burwell began in 1921, the rodeo’s PRCA record book begins in 1975. Since, many of the biggest names in professional rodeo have competed at the “Outdoor Rodeo Capital of Nebraska.” Tie-down roper Jerome Schneeberger set the Burwell record of 8.2 seconds in 2005.

Tie-down roper Sterling Smith broke a 21-year-old Cheyenne (Wyo.) Frontier Days record by half a second July 23. “It’s a pretty good feeling,” the 34-year-old Arizonan said after making the run. “It didn’t sink in at first, and now it’s sinking in.”

Steer wrestler Tyler Pearson is on track to earn his second consecutive world title after winning the K-Days Rodeo in Edmonton, Alberta. Pearson was already leading the 2018 PRCA | RAM World Standings by about $9,000 prior to winning nearly $10,000 with a 3.1-second run at the K-Days Rodeo.

Cheyenne (Wyo.) Frontier Days is underway through July 29, but only the best leave their mark by setting a rodeo record. Bareback rider Joe Alexander has the longest-standing Cheyenne record with his 93-point ride from 1974. Taylor Price set the three-head average record of 261 points in 2013.

Spanish Fork (Utah) Fiesta Days Rodeo had a big increase in total payout from 2016 to 2017, increasing by $24,892. This iconic rodeo’s record payout was shattered in 2017 with $276,762. Saddle bronc rider Jeff Willert set the Spanish Fork record of 89 points in 2005.
