PRCA Properties retains 776 Original Marketing
The Properties Division of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) has retained 776 Original Marketing to design and direct a National Sponsorship and Licensing Sales Program on behalf of the PRCA. The agreement is effective immediately and will run through 2010.

The crowd-pleasing flying dismount in front of 14,000 spectators in Edmonton’s Rexall Place couldn’t have been more perfectly executed. The Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo Board of Directors plans to hire a full-time salaried Chief Executive Officer in the next few months and eliminate the position of Executive Director. The Executive Director office holder changed every three years, leading to complications with long-term contracts and vendors. CFD Board President Jim Ward told the Wyoming Tribune-Eagle that the change is meant to bring more consistency and cohesiveness to the rodeo’s operation.

Judge gets bulldogging verdict in Southeastern
Steer wrestler Bud Hallman won the average of the Dodge Southeastern Circuit Finals Rodeo, presented by U.S. Smokeless Tobacco, which was held Nov. 5-7 in Davie, Fla. Hallman, from Webster, Fla., finished with a time of 16.5 seconds on three head to qualify for the Dodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo, April 7-10 in Pocatello, Idaho. Hallman, 56, probably won’t be quitting his day job to rodeo full-time.

Etbauer repeats as Linderman Award winner
Trell Etbauer has won the Linderman Award for the second consecutive year. The Goodwell, Okla., cowboy won more than $1,000 in each of three events and worked both ends of the arena. Etbauer finished the 2009 season with $50,028. He won money in steer wrestling ($25,699), saddle bronc riding ($18,831), tie-down roping ($4,988) and team roping ($510). Rocks Eye Opener, “Jessie,” was voted the AQHA/PRCA Steer Wrestling Horse of the Year. Calgary Stampede’s Grated Coconut was selected the USSTC/PRCA Bareback Riding Horse of the Year. The stud won the award for a record-tying sixth time and it was the fourth consecutive year Grated Coconut has received the most votes. Grated Coconut also took Canadian Professional Rodeo Association honors.

Key competitions in the homestretch of the ProRodeo season will be televised in October and November. Coverage of the Ellensburg (Wash.) Rodeo will be broadcast on ESPN2 at 3 p.m. (EDT) Oct. 11. The program will re-air at noon on ESPN Classic on Oct. 17 and Nov. 15. The Ellensburg Rodeo, held Sept. 4-7, was the final stop of the Wrangler Million Dollar Tour presented by Justin Boots.

Tie-down roping contestants’ rodeo limit expanded
The number of rodeos a tie-down roping contestant can officially count toward his world standings in 2010 was raised from 70 to 100 during last week’s PRCA Board of Directors Meeting in Omaha, Neb.

Round-Up to clinch the coveted “Big 4 Award,” given to the high-money earner at the rodeos in Walla Walla, Wash.; Lewiston, Idaho; Ellensburg, Wash.; and Pendleton. Cannon won the first round at Pendleton and finished sixth in the average to earn $5,193 for the weekend, which kept him atop the Big 4 standings after wins at Lewiston and Walla Walla. He received a $5,000 bonus check with the award.

Kansas cowboy Jared Keylon won the bareback riding average at the Pendleton (Ore.) Round-Up, which concluded on Sept. 19. Legendary bullfighter injured in Ellensburg
Montana bullfighter Loyd Ketchum sustained a mid-back injury on Sept. 5 at the Ellensburg (Wash.) Rodeo and had surgery on Sept. 6 at the Seattle Hospital. Ketchum was thrown into the air by a bull and then landed on his back. He fractured his T12 vertebra and sustained a spinal cord contusion. He was expected to be in the hospital through Sept. 12, according to Ketchum’s wife, Ashlee.

Steve Purcella and Jhett Johnson won the team roping title at the Justin Boots Playoffs, Sept. 13 in Puyallup, Wash. The duo roped their steer in 6.0 seconds in the final-four round.

Corkill breaks regular-season earnings record
Team roper Jade Corkill, a heeler, has earned $112,246 this season, thus breaking the previous regular-season earnings record of $110,626 set in 2000 by eight-time World Champion Heeler Rich Skelton. Trevor Brazile collected two more all-around titles last week – to bring his total to 13 in six weeks – and advanced his bid for a record-tying seventh all-around world championship by traveling to three states and banking checks everywhere he went. Brazile earned $4,531 at the Colorado State Fair in Pueblo, $2,119 at the Magic Valley Stampede in Filer, Idaho, and $5,413 at the Ellensburg (Wash.) Rodeo, missing a sweep of all-around titles only when Josh Peek out-earned him in Filer.

Kruse scores 91, sets Ellensburg arena record
Saddle bronc rider Jesse Kruse, of Great Falls, Mont., won the Ellensburg (Wash.) Rodeo by scoring an arena record of 91 points on Flying Five Rodeo’s Kool Toddy in the finals on Sept. 7. Kruse broke the previous record of 89 points set by South Dakota’s Jesse Bail in 2007.

Hancock claims Xtreme Bulls national championship
The answer is Cody Hancock. The question was, who was going to emerge as the Xtreme Bulls year-end champion in a season of parity? There were nine different tour-stop champions in 2009, and there was no clear-cut favorite heading into the Seminole Hard Rock Xtreme Bulls Finale, presented by B&W Trailer Hitches in Ellensburg, Wash., on Sept. 5. It makes sense then that the veteran in the group would come through when the title was on the line.

PRCA cowboys to help build a Habitat House
PRCA cowboys will be among those to help construct a Habitat for Humanity House from 4-6 p.m. (PDT) on Sept. 11 at the Puyallup (Wash.) fairgrounds. The cowboys will be in the Northwest for the Puyallup Pro Rodeo, the site of the 2009 Justin Boots Playoffs. The cowboys chosen to represent the PRCA during the two-hour shift will be determined once the rodeo’s competition draw has been completed and schedules can be confirmed. The Playoffs run Sept. 11-13.

A story about stock contractor Kirsten Vold will be among the segments on MSNBC’s Your Biz at 7:30 p.m. EDT Aug. 30. The segment will tell the story of the daughter of 11-time PRCA Stock Contractor Harry Vold as she helps run the Harry Vold Rodeo Company and makes her mark in a male-dominated profession. The Vold family is among the PRCA’s most well-known. Along with the Harry Vold Rodeo Company, the ProRodeo Hall of Famer’s children Dona Vold Larsen, Darce Vold and Doug Vold run the Triple V Rodeo Company.

While he was a bit off of that record, he did win the first round of competition, finish fourth in the second round and is first overall.

Trevor Brazile won the tie-down roping average en route to claiming the all-around title at the Farm-City Pro Rodeo, which was held Aug. 12-15 in Hermiston, Ore. The reigning all-around world champion finished first in the tie-down roping with a time of 17.9 seconds on two head and collected $3,632. Brazile, roping with heeler Patrick Smith, placed fifth in 11.6 seconds on two head in the team roping average and pocketed $2,662.

Lovington proves to be the place for closeness
Zack Oakes won the bull riding at the Lea County Fair & Rodeo, which concluded on Aug. 8 in Lovington, N.M. The Elk, Wash., cowboy scored 87 points on Triple V Rodeo’s Short Cash and collected $5,487. The Lovington rodeo was a silver-tier rodeo on the Wrangler Million Dollar Tour presented by Justin Boots.

Beers refreshes his WNFR hopes with Sikeston win
Brandon Beers keeps inching toward a spot in the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo without getting any closer to knowing who he might rope with if he makes it to the Thomas & Mack Center. Beers paired with Ryan Motes, Aug. 5-8, to win the Sikeston (Mo.) Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo, a Wrangler Million Dollar Tour silver-tier event presented by Justin Boots and finish third in the Lawton (Okla.) Rangers Rodeo .

Former NIRA Executive Secretary Corfield dies
Tim Corfield, former Executive Secretary of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association, died Aug. 8 from complications of cancer, in Spokane, Wash. He was 66. Corfield served the NIRA from 1979-2001 and also had stints as the Walla Walla (Wash.) Community College rodeo coach and the Northwest Region Faculty Director. He had most recently worked producing barrel races in the Northwest. The funeral service will be Aug. 14 at 1:15 p.m. (PT) at the Pendleton (Ore.) Round-Up Arena

Dennis Finfrock, 1947-2009
Friends and colleagues of the late Dennis Finfrock, a former executive director of the Thomas & Mack Center who was influential in the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo moving to Las Vegas, are getting together Aug. 13 for one last night of remembrance at the MGM Grand. The by-invitation-only affair is being billed as "An Evening of Dennis Stories," covering his long career as a special events visionary in the Las Vegas market and theathletic director at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. Mr. Finfrock died July 12 at age 62 from complications associated withParkinson''s disease.

Gray ties world record with 94-point ride in Eagle
Like a scene straight out of the movie The Natural, with lightning flashes all around and rain pouring down, Ryan Gray climbed aboard Carr Pro Rodeo’s Grass Dancer July 31 and tied the bareback riding world record with a 94-point ride at the Eagle County Fair & Rodeo in Eagle, Colo. It was just the third 94-pointer in PRCA history, as Gray joined Wes Stevenson (Dallas, 2002) and Will Lowe (Omaha, 2003) in the record book.

National Little Britches Finals results
The National Little Britches Rodeo Association held its National Finals Rodeo at the Colorado State Fairgrounds in Pueblo, Colo., July 27-Aug. 1, where more than 800 contestants, ages 5-18, competed for world championships. The overall awards package included $60,000 in scholarships and $190,000 in custom-made saddles and buckles.

Etbauer steals the show at Cheyenne Frontier Days
Five-time World Champion Saddle Bronc Rider Billy Etbauer won his first Cheyenne (Wyo.) Frontier Days title on July 26 at Stampede Park. Etbauer clinched the title by scoring 89 points on prized Harry Vold Rodeo Company stud Painted Valley. He finished with a total of 251 points on three head.

Brazile has eye on earnings record
After a week of driving back and forth through Kansas wheat fields, harvesting money at every stop, Trevor Brazile finds himself ahead of the pace he set in 2007 when he broke the PRCA single-season earnings record.

Fundraiser July 31 for Jace Peterson
On July 31, a fundraiser will be held to benefit Jace Peterson, son of PRCA steer wrestler Jesse Peterson and his wife, Jenny, at Keltz Arena, on the campus of The University of Montana Western in Dillon, Mont.
Jace Peterson has a seizure disorder, which has resulted in numerous stays in the hospital and daily medications.

World champion bull rider claims Dodge City win
Reigning World Champion J. W. Harris swept the bull riding at the Dodge City (Kan.) Roundup Rodeo, which concluded on Aug. 2. Harris finished first with a score of 176 points on two head. The PRCA World Standings leader from May, Texas, scored 90 points on Frontier Rodeo’s Big L in the first round and 86 points on Klein Brothers Pro Rodeo’s War Paint in the finals and collected a total of $6,156 for win.

The 61st Annual National High School Finals Rodeo was held July 19-25 in Farmington, N.M. The competition featured a total of 1,375 students from the United States, Canada and Australia. First Kendra Santos scholarship awarded
The first Kendra Santos Communications Scholarship was awarded July 20 at the National High School Finals Rodeo in Farmington, N.M., to Taylor Jacob of Carmine, Texas. The $2,500 scholarship will be presented annually to an NHSRA member who''s headed to college to pursue a career in a media-related field.

Fund set up to meet bull rider’s medical costs
Friends of four-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier Chris Littlejohn have come together to establish a fund to help the bull rider cover his medical bills following injuries he sustained at a bull riding event in Odessa, Mo., June 20.

High School Finals Rodeo underway
The 61st Annual National High School Finals Rodeo (NHSFR) is officially off and running in Farmington, N.M. This year’s event features a total of 1,375 contestants from the United States, Canada and Australia. Rodeo performances will be held at 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. (MDT) daily, with the championship round to be held at 7 p.m. July 25.

Two-time and reigning World Champion Steer Wrestler Luke Branquinho won the steer wrestling average at California Rodeo Salinas, which was held July 16-19. The Los Alamos, Calif., steer wrestler finished first with a time of 21.5 seconds on three head and collected $5,136.

Dr. Doug Corey, who has served on the PRCA’s Advisory Council on Animal Welfare for more than 25 years, was awarded the American Veterinary Medical Association’s (AVMA) President’s Award for his service to animals and the veterinary profession last week. He received the award at the 146th AVMA Annual Convention in Schaumberg, Ill., on July 11 along with two other veterinarians. It is the second honor for Corey in the past two months, as he was elected vice chairman of the Unwanted Horse Coalition on June 15. He was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 2007 for his ongoing service to the PRCA.

Bucking horse field trip
Stock contractor Ike Sankey gave a couple of PRCA staff members a tour of his pasture near the Cody (Wyo.) Stampede Arena on July 4. Sankey had 109 young bucking horses there. Spring rainfall and sunshine had helped produce lush grass and wildflowers.

PRCA inks deal with A3 Merchandise
The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) has awarded A3 Merchandise, a division of the newly formed W.A.Y Entertainment, world-wide exclusive merchandise rights. A3 Merchandise will also have the exclusive online rights to all PRCA marks, which will be marketed through the newly created ecommerce site, prorodeogear.com, launching later this month.

Mortensen heads 6-man Hall of Fame induction
Seven-time World Champion Dan Mortensen was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame this morning, taking his place alongside Casey Tibbs, the only other man to win six world championships in saddle bronc riding, the sport''s signature event.

Silcox moves into first place in the bull riding
Wesley Silcox, the 2007 World Champion Bull Rider, scored 91 points on Frontier Rodeo Company’s Cajun Monkey to the delight of ProRodeo fans at the Pikes Peak or Bust Days Rodeo on July 9 in Colorado Springs, Colo. The rodeo is a silver-tier stop on the Wrangler Million Dollar Tour presented by Justin Boots and concludes with 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. performances on July 11.

Lane Frost documentary Thursday night
The documentary “The Challenge of Champions: The Story of Lane Frost and Red Rock” will be shown at the ProRodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame and Museum of the American Cowboy at 6:30 p.m. July 9. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 children. Proceeds benefit the Lane Frost Memorial Scholarship. Frost, pictured here in Douglas, Wyo., passed away at the age of 25 following injuries sustained bull riding at Cheyenne (Wyo.) Frontier Days in 1989. He won a world title in 1987 and was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 1990.

Cowboy Christmas is all about scooping up some of the prize money that is up for grabs, and there were plenty of happy cowboys at the Cody (Wyo.) Stampede July 1-4. For some, it had been awhile since they had cashed on Christmas.

Greeley winners get big Christmas gifts on 4th
A group of road-weary cowboys descended on Greeley, Colo., for the short round at the Greeley Independence Stampede July 4, but no level of fatigue could keep the smiles off the faces of the Independence Day winners. Six of the day’s seven winners not only won first-place money for the round, but for the average as well.

Wrangler Junior High Finals concludes
Saddles were won, buckles were presented, and scholarships were awarded at the fifth annual Wrangler Junior High Finals Rodeo, which concluded July 4 at Red Rock Park in Gallup, N.M. A total of 816 contestants from the United States, Canada, and Australia competed in this year’s finals.
Performances ran throughout the week of June 28, with the top 20 athletes in each event qualifying for the championship on July 4.

Chad Denton won the overall title at the Cody-Yellowstone Seminole Hard Rock Xtreme Bulls Tour stop on July 5 at Stampede Park. The Oresville, Calif., cowboy scored 181.5 points (90.5 and 91) on two head and collected $15,134 for the win.

Wrangler Jr. High Finals Rodeo, June 28-July 4
The Wrangler Junior High Finals Rodeo is off and running in Gallup, New Mexico. This year’s event features a total of 816 contestants from Canada and Australia, along with the United States.
This is the fifth time the event has been held at Red Rock Park in Gallup. The Wrangler Division was created in 2004 – by the National High School Rodeo Association (NHSRA) – to introduce a new generation of students to the sport of rodeo and to act as a feeder system for the high school ranks.

Cowboy Christmas winner: Bobby Mote, $29,926
Bobby Mote clinched the average of the Greeley (Colo.) Independence Stampede with this 89-point ride on Beutler & Son’s Molly Brown on July 4. The two-time world champion, who resides in Culver, Ore., racked up a total of five top four finishes to become PRCA’s big winner over the Fourth of July run known as Cowboy Christmas.

Rodeo family suffers horrific loss
Riley Key, the 18-year-old son of veteran PRCA team roper David Key and barrel racer Tammy Key-Fischer, was among three teenagers who died in the early hours of June 27 from injuries suffered in a single-vehicle accident in Washington County, Texas.
