• 2005: Partner Jake Barnes suffered a right thumb amputation in the fifth round of the Wrangler NFR. Koontz  finished the last five rounds with Trevor Brazile and rebounded in fine fashion by winning the sixth round and tying the then arena record of 3.7 seconds and sharing the victory in round eight with a 3.8-second run. He finished the year ranked third in the world with $142.237. Won the Summer Tour Finale (Omaha, Neb.); the Dodge City (Kan.) Roundup Rodeo and California Rodeo Salinas; co-champion at the Ellensburg (Wash.) Rodeo. Won the Wrangler ProRodeo Tour Round at the Guymon (Okla.) Pioneer Days Rodeo
• 2004: (Partner Matt Tyler) Finished 12th in the world standings with $78,629 and was seventh in the Wrangler NFR average, picking up $27,410. Co-champion at La Fiesta de los Vaqueros (Tucson, Ariz.); won the Tour Round at Clovis (Calif.) Rodeo; won the Mineral Wells (Texas) PRCA Rodeo and the Grand National (San Francisco); was a semifinalist at Winter Tour Finale (Las Vegas). Won the Pioneer Days Rodeo (Clovis, N.M.) with Steve Purcella; placed in three rounds at the Wrangler NFR winning Round 4 with a time of 4.5 seconds; and won the year-end title in the Texas Circuit, with Steve Purcella

6-1, 175 ... Son, Jae; daughters, Harlee and Ashlee ... Hobbies include golf ... Has diabetes and wears an insulin monitor that automatically gives him insulin when he needs it. He initially took insulin injections, but he changed to the insulin pump after his mother-in-law, Janie Ray, showed him an article on PGA golfer Scott Verplank, who uses the insulin pump. The insulin is fast-acting and provides insulin 24 hours a day, but he still checks his blood glucose level eight to 10 times a day. He was featured in Diabetes Forecast magazine ... Graduated from Amherst (Texas) High School with six people .. .Enjoys watching the Dallas Cowboys ... Rodeo idol is Clay O’Brien Cooper
