Lews Feild 1985
Two of our greatest living legends—in and out of the arena—lit up the Thomas & Mack Center Arena in 1985, the first year the National Finals Rodeo moved to Las Vegas. The same two cowboy icons were the most noticeably absent 30 years later at the 2015 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Polaris RANGER. ProRodeo Hall of Famers Lewis Feild and Jake Barnes are two of the most respected and beloved members of our rodeo family, and we missed them both so much this round for sad reasons.

Jesse Segura, Sterling Lambert, Cody Anderson and Lane Santos-Karney are joining forces with professional athletes in several sports, including rodeo, to rally the Western empire with the Western Heritage Preservation Society. In this “cowboy boardroom” shot, Sterling, who’s best known as “Gator,” sported the custom glove that was a gift from American League Pitcher of September Cody, and Cody and Lane wore matching buckles won in the bulldogging and team roping at the 2015 RAM California Circuit Finals Rodeo.

DeadwoodDeadwood deserves a line on everybody’s bucket list for the beauty of the Black Hills alone. It’s been on mine for decades now, and I finally got my chance this summer. I knew it was a cowboy favorite, based on the 15 Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Rodeo Committee of the Year awards, which are voted on by members.

I first met Zayne Dishion when he was 5, and was crowned the 5-and-Under World Champion Dummy Roper in Las Vegas. He was a cute little fellow, and was surrounded in the winner’s circle on that stage by the likes of eight-time World Champion Team Roper Speed Williams and ProRodeo Hall of Famer Tee Woolman.

“I went to college because I wanted to go try to win national titles,” Ty told me. “The fact that I got my education paid for through scholarships through the success I’d had in rodeo was awesome. My parents didn’t have the money to send me to college. I learned a lot in college, not only from classes but also about riding bucking horses and bulls. College is an amazing stepping stone. That sounds like a cliche, but that’s what it is.

Jesse Andrus and Mike Hillman were fun-loving all-American boys—cowboys—and the best of brotherly friends. The popular Goddard High School seniors, who were 18 and winning up a storm in the New Mexico High School Rodeo Association when they headed to Heaven together, were so close to being brothers that they took their senior pictures together. The super sad irony is that the boys did the responsible thing that we as parents ask them to do—when they were too tired to drive, they pulled over to get some sleep instead of risking falling asleep at the wheel.

Mike DeMoss was smiling from the most Heavenly seat in the house March 28, when his baby boy took the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo saddle bronc riding title in high-flying Heith DeMoss style. Six-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier Heith, who’ll turn 30 on April 26, won both the semifinals—with 83 points aboard Rafter H Rodeo’s Spade—and the four-man finals—with an 87-point ride on Stace Smith Pro Rodeos’ Goin South.

We hurt each year for the guys who wind up in the 16th-place heartbreak hole. Imagine coming close enough to see the big bucks and bright lights of Vegas—only to realize it’s all a mirage—in back-to-back seasons.
