I always have a huge heart for the guys who finish 16th in the world. In most cases, they were one flat tire, missed flight, broken barrier or free-hand-slap at the whistle away from a shot at the $10 million Big Show. And we all know the toll it takes in terms of physical, mental and financial sacrifice to finish anywhere near the Top 15.

Lews Feild 1985
Two of our greatest living legends—in and out of the arena—lit up the Thomas & Mack Center Arena in 1985, the first year the National Finals Rodeo moved to Las Vegas. I first met Zayne Dishion when he was 5, and was crowned the 5-and-Under World Champion Dummy Roper in Las Vegas. He was a cute little fellow, and was surrounded in the winner’s circle on that stage by the likes of eight-time World Champion Team Roper Speed Williams and ProRodeo Hall of Famer Tee Woolman.

“I went to college because I wanted to go try to win national titles,” Ty told me. “The fact that I got my education paid for through scholarships through the success I’d had in rodeo was awesome. My parents didn’t have the money to send me to college. I learned a lot in college, not only from classes but also about riding bucking horses and bulls. College is an amazing stepping stone. That sounds like a cliche, but that’s what it is.

Jesse Andrus and Mike Hillman were fun-loving all-American boys—cowboys—and the best of brotherly friends. The popular Goddard High School seniors, who were 18 and winning up a storm in the New Mexico High School Rodeo Association when they headed to Heaven together, were so close to being brothers that they took their senior pictures together. The super sad irony is that the boys did the responsible thing that we as parents ask them to do—when they were too tired to drive, they pulled over to get some sleep instead of risking falling asleep at the wheel.
