December 2014 PSN Preview Issue Lewis Feild, the 1985 world champion bareback rider and all-around cowboy, won his first two of five gold buckles that year, and went on to raise a beautiful family, including son Kaycee, who’s won three straight world bareback riding crowns and is the leader of the pack heading into this year’s Finals.

The 2015 ProRodeo season kicked off October 1, and as everyone is making a game plan for this next year, it seems like prime time to step back and look at all the new money on the table in our sport. The fact that it’s historically unparalleled is very exciting for all of us, as is the fact that it’s going to impact every level of our game.

ProRodeo Sports News August 2014I grew up going to Salinas every July with my dad, who won his first Salinas buckle when he was 12 and this year was inducted into the California Rodeo Hall of Fame. Salinas is a four-generation family tradition, so the misty-morning slacks, long score lines and smell of tri-tip on the barbecue over at the cowboy camps that make it Big Week feel like home.

Not Lane. That’s what we were all thinking 25 years ago this week when the fog of disbelief started to clear, and we were forced to face the fact that rodeo’s golden boy was really gone. He took a hit that didn’t look that bad, as fast as it happened and by Lane’s standards. Lane Frost was notoriously tough, and we’d all seen him walk away from so many wrecks that looked so much worse.

My most vivid memory of Gordy Alderson from his rodeo days was seeing him settle in for the evening in the cowboy parking lot at a rodeo in Colorado. It was starting to rain, so before retiring for the night into the camper on the back of his truck, he took his garden party inside the old red gooseneck trailer.

Byron Walker Byron Walker was the American Junior Rodeo Association steer wrestling champ in 1975, and his buddy Roy Cooper won the tie-down roping and all-around titles. They went on to win Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association championships in 1978 for winning more than anyone else in the regular season.
