We had member meetings at the recent Wrangler Champions Challenge presented by Justin Boots events in Amarillo, Texas, and Kissimmee, Fla., and the contestants, this administration and our sponsor partners put our heads together to make some decisions on what’s best for the Champions Challenge in 2014.

People have actually posted as fact that in 2014 our members will have to choose between a Wrangler National Finals Rodeo card, which would make them eligible to qualify for the Wrangler NFR but would prohibit them from participating in some non-sanctioned events, and a second-level PRCA card that would allow them to compete at those non-sanctioned events but not the NFR.

Prescott might be home to the World’s Oldest Rodeo. But before the gate cracks on the 126th edition of Arizona’s Prescott Frontier Days, an annual Cowboy Christmas tradition that this year runs July 1-7, I’d like to introduce you to a family who is now seven generations strong into this rodeo and ranching area’s history books.

ProRodeo Hall of Fame member Mildred Farris passed away May 13, 2013, at her home in Addington, Okla., at the age of 79 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

Rodeo lost a man who made a memorable mark in multiple cowboy careers when that Cessna 210 crashed in an open field just after take-off from Roma Airport in Western Queensland, Australia on March 25. John Quintana, the 1972 world champion bull rider who piloted the plane, was 65.

Rodeo fans have quickly learned that those little brothers possessed some big-time talent of their own, particularly in the case of 22-year-old Jesse Wright, the 2009 Resistol Rookie of the Year who has already earned a reputation in the past two years as being a show stealer at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas.

Seeing Tuf Cooper ride into the box on opening night of the 2011 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo aboard a little buckskin horse by the name of Jaguar made me smile. It took me all the way back to a day about a decade ago when I was in Fort Worth for an event, and his ProRodeo Hall of Famer dad Roy invited me across town to watch his then-little boys, Clif and Tuf, rope at a junior rodeo over at Cowtown Coliseum.
